Synergy West Ltd., an environmental consulting firm, was established in Calgary, Alberta in 1973. It consisted of a small group of professionals, including J.P. Coombes and Bruce W. Runge, who undertook interdisciplinary studies of land use and environmental planning. The company was registered provincially in 1975. Projects undertaken by Synergy included studies of hospital waste disposals and oil reclamation in Alberta, a study of Alberta campgrounds, an evaluation of historic sites in the Yukon, a community plan for Dawson City, and a transportation study for the City of Calgary. The company became dormant in about 1979.
