        Herbert D. Surplis, ca. 1895-1983, was born in Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, Ireland. He came with his parents to Milton, Ontario in 1912, and then to Calgary in 1915. He was educated in Calgary, and after high school attended Garbutt Business College. He worked for Burns and Co. and City Hall before obtaining a degree from the University of Alberta in 1930. While in university he began providing news items for the Calgary Herald and upon graduating obtained a full time position with the paper. He served in the Second World War as a gunnery instructor. By the 1960s he was writing a Herald column, "The Business Beat". He and his wife, Nancy Smith, were married in 1937 and had two children, David William and Helen Elizabeth (Aikenhead). He retired in 1974.
