The Coordination Task Force was created in May 1996 to integrate and coordinate strategic planning at the University of Calgary. The Task Force was charged with the mandate of
- 1) developing a comprehensive and integrative plan for institutional direction and
- 2) coordinating existing innovative efforts and identifying additional issues and activities that must be addressed for an integrated institutional approach.
There were eight areas of focus: Communication and Dialogue; Existing and Emerging Strengths; Learner Analysis; Technology for Support and Enhancement; Staff; Financing; Comparative Analysis; Research and Scholarship. The Coordination Task Force reported directly to the University Planning Committee (UPC). The Task Force worked to develop context and direction for institutional transformation and its efforts culminated in the production of the document "Our Strategic Direction to the Future". The General Faculties Council and the Board of Governors approved this document in December 1996.
With the completion of the Coordination Task Force, the University created several design and other situation assessment teams to evolve and develop action plans for implementing the Strategic Direction. These included:
- the Institutional Positioning Team that concentrated on the development of a marketing strategy for undergraduate students;
- Undergraduate Curriculum Redesign;
- Research & Graduate Studies;
- Undergraduate Recruit, Admit Redesign Team;
- Library Situation Assessment Team.
The preparation of the Three-Year Business Plan was initially included in the Strategic Transformation process. This process was later taken over by the VP (Finance and Services).
