Fred V. Stone, 1905-1994, was born on a farm near Alix, Alberta. He earned a BA in economics at McGill University and also did some graduate studies there under Stephen Leacock. He worked for a few years as an assistant manager of Central Alberta Dairy Pool. Stone was a supporter of the United Farmers of Alberta(UFA) and in 1934 he was hired as secretary to Premier R.G. Reid. He was responsible for screening visitors and phone calls, and writing letters and speeches. When the Social Credit government was elected in 1935 he was retained as William Aberhart’s secretary. He resigned in 1937 to accept a position with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), and eventually became vice-president in its Natural Resources Division. He was living in Montreal, Quebec, when he retired in 1969.
