      Stephan Gudmundor Stephansson, 1853-1927, was born in northern Iceland and emigrated to North America in 1872. He lived briefly in Wisconsin and Dakota Territory, USA before coming to Alberta in 1889 to settle at Tindastoll, near Markerville. He was one of the leading Romantic poets of Iceland. He married Helga Sigridur, ?-1940, and they had six children, Fanny (Bardal), Rosa (Benediktson), Valdur, Jacob G., Gudmundur and Mrs. Sigurdson.

      Some of his writings were compiled and translated in the volume Stephan G. Stephansson : Selected Prose and Poetry = Urval ur Verkum Stephans G. Stephanssonar / translated by Kristjana Gunnars. - Red Deer, Alta. : Red Deer College Press, 1988. In 1946 the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada designated Stephansson as a National Historic Person.
