        Canadian author Fred Stenson was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, on December 22, 1951. Stenson writes novels, short stories, and is a documentary film writer. His novel The Trade was shortlisted for the Giller Prize in 2000; two of his novels have won the Grant MacEwan Author's Prize for best Alberta book of the year: Lightning, and The Trade. The novel The Great Karoo was nominated both for the Governor General's Literary Award in Fiction (2008), and the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book (Canada/Caribbean) (2009).

        Stensn is married to the poet Pamela Banting and lives in Cochrane, Alberta.
