Robert William Stedman, 1921-2003, was born in Ottawa, Canada. Born to a military family, he attended Royal Military College and graduated with a Special War Certificate on May 23, 1941, qualifying for the commissioned rank Second Lieutenant. He embarked to the United Kingdom, June 1941, sailing from Halifax on the S.S. Pasteur. He was posted to the Royal Armoured Corps, before being transferred in May 1942 to the Royal Tank Regiment. He served during the North African Campaign, receiving a leg wound during the Second Battle of El Alamein. May, 1943 he was sent to Italy. He earned the Military Cross for courageous actions in battle at the Volturno River. January, 1944, he returned to the United Kingdom and was sent home for medical reasons. After the war, he earned a Bachelor of Military Science from Royal Military College and served as a Major in the Canadian Army Reserve from 1947 to 1960. He went on to become a mechanical engineer and later company president in the Howe Group of Companies. He volunteered with the Canadian War Museum. Robert Stedman died in Ottawa in October of 2003.
