History
Marcus Smith, 1815-1904, was born near Berwick-on-Tweed, England. He was a railway surveyor by profession, and he worked for various railways in England, USA, South Africa and Canada. In 1872 he was appointed as deputy to the Engineer-in-Chief of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He took charge of British Columbia surveys, 1876-1878, and was then appointed to locate the line from Red River to Yellow Head Pass, 1978-1881. He continued to work for the CPR in British Columbia until 1886. He and his wife, Anne Brock, had at least two sons.
