History
James "Cappy" Smart, 1865-1939, was born in Dundee, Scotland. In 1883 he traveled to Calgary, Alberta with his uncle, Thomas Swan. He worked at various jobs until he joined the Calgary Fire Department in 1885. In December 1894 he was elected secretary of the volunteer brigade and in 1898 became fire chief. He held the post until 1933. He had a long association with the Calgary Stampede and various sports organizations.
He married Agnes "Aggie" Leishman, 1862-1929, in 1892 and they had two children, James L. "Bud", 1895-1905, and Minnie B., 1893-. His memoirs of early Calgary were published in the Calgary Herald over the winter of 1932-1933 and were repeated in the Herald Magazine beginning in January 1966.
Cappy Smart School in Calgary was named in his honour in 1978.
