Biographical history

Sidney Bruce Smith, 1899-1984, was born in Toronto, Ontario. He was educated at the University of Alberta, receiving his BA in 1919. He was called to the Bar in 1921 and completed his law degree in 1922. In 1925 he married Doris Gertrude Charlesworth and they had two sons, David Bruce, 1927-2008, and Sidney Gerald Denis. He practiced with the Edmonton firm of Smith, Clement, Parlee, Whittaker, Irving, Mustard and Rodney from 1931 to 1959. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Alberta in 1959. From 1961 to 1974 he was Chief Justice of Alberta and the NWT Court of Appeal. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta in 1962.
