History
Major-General Robert William Rutherford, 1857-1933, was born in Northumberland, England, and came to Nova Scotia with his family in 1866. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and during his military career served with General Middleton in the 1885 Riel Rebellion (North West Rebellion). He fought at Battleford, in the battle of Cut Knife Hill, and during the campaign against Big Bear. An accomplished artist, he did a series of drawings of Rebellion events which were published in illustrated journals in eastern Canada. He married Maud Carruthers in 1889.
