Biographical history
German writer, painter, graphic artist and sculptor, Ruth Schaumann was born in Hamburg, Germany, August 24, 1899, and grew up in Hagenau, Alsace. She lost her hearing at the age of six due to scarlet feaver and remained deaf the rest of her life. She studied fashion design and then sculpture at the Munich Art School. She converted to Roman Catholicism in 1924 just before her marriage to Friedrich Fuchs. Subsequently, her work in all media had a religious flavour. Her sculptures included altarpieces, statues and church windows. She also published poetry, short stories, novels, prose and an autobiographical work, Das Arsenal. She died March 13, 1975, in Munich.

Fonds consists of correspondence, poetry and sketches including holograph and typescript letters and poetry, 26 sketches (postcards), 1 original, signed, card in pen and ink, 2 b&w photographs, and nespaper clippings. All of the material was sent to R. Shaumann's friend and neighbour, Anna Maria Boening, and was kept by her daughter, Annalise K. Walker.
