Max Wolfe Rubin grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan and attended Lisgar Collegiate. He received a BA in History from Carleton University in 1970 and an MA from the University of Regina in 1975 with a thesis on the response of the Bennett government to the depression in Saskatchewan. In the early 1980s he studied at the University of Calgary and wrote an article about the Jews of Alberta in Howard and Tamara Palmer's books Peoples of Alberta (1985).
