Biographical history
Rosalee Mary Anne Auger, 1933- , was born in Port Arthur, Ontario and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve in Winnipeg in 1952, volunteered for Continuous Naval Duty (full-time service) in 1953, and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy (Wrens) regular force in 1955 when this opportunity was offered to women for the first time in Commonwealth naval history. During her career she served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Commands; HMCS Niobe, London, England; and HMCS Bytown, Ottawa, Ontario.
In 1959 she was appointed secretary to Queen Elizabeth's assistant press secretary, Esmond Butler. She worked at Buckingham Palace and accompanied the Royal party during the Royal Tour of Canada (1959). She was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1964 and honorably released from the service in 1965. She later married Hendrik E. van Stelten, who was originally from Holland, and they settled in Calgary, Alberta. Van Stelten moved to Victoria, British Columbia in 2002.
