Biographical history

Robert Wray Smith, [ca.1892]-?, was born in England. He was a member of one of the organizations which eventually amalgamated to become the Boy Scouts. During the First World War Sergeant Smith was a stretcher-bearer with the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, a unit of the 50th Division of the British Expeditionary Force. He saw action at the Somme and Passchendaele, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal with bar. After the war he married and was active in a veterans' organization, the Legion of Frontiersmen.

Archival history

This fonds was acquired by the Riveredge Foundation from a British dealer in 1971. It was transferred to Glenbow in 1981.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a diary detailing his experiences in battle. Includes poems and essays he wrote during the war and afterwards; photographs (including one of Smith in uniform); newsclippings; and memorabilia. Includes a letter from Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts.
