Biographical history
Robert Campbell, 1808-1894, was born in Glen Lyon, Perthshire, Scotland. He was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1830 to help establish an experimental farm in the Red River Settlement in Manitoba, then subsequently worked as a fur trader for the company. In 1842 he built Frances Lake post in the Yukon, and in 1848 built Fort Selkirk. He explored the Pelly River in 1851. After Fort Selkirk was damaged by the Chilkats in 1852, he was reassigned to Fort Liard, NWT in 1854. He became chief trader of the Athabasca District in 1856, was moved to Swan River District in 1863, and became Chief Factor in 1867. He was abruptly dismissed from the HBC in 1871, and spent his retirement ranching in Manitoba, and visiting Scotland. He married Elleonora C. Stirling in 1859, and they had three children. His son, Glen Campbell, 1863-1917, was a Member of Parliament (MP) and Indian Commissioner.
