History
Riverside Villa, a halfway house for alcoholic women in Calgary, Alberta, was first opened in 1970 to provide a home-like and supervised atmosphere for women having difficulty adjusting to society's norms. Originally intended also for women with emotional or social problems, it became clear over time that a majority of residents had alcohol problems, so this became the focus. The Villa is managed by the Riverside Villa Association. It was run on a voluntary basis until operational funding was received from Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission in 1973. RVA now operates houses in both north and south Calgary, where counselling, therapy sessions, films and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are offered to residents.
