Fonds F1574 - Richard Robinson fonds

Richard George Robinson, 1850-1935, was born at Greenland, Cockermouth, Cumberland, England and came to Alberta in 1888 as a manager of the Chipman Ranch on the Elbow River just southwest of Calgary, Alberta. He married Mary Ann Zammitt, 1857-1947, and they had nine children, Joseph, 1877-1953, John, Wilfred, Isabelle (Bogue), Mary (Pierson), Maria Marguerite (Van Watt), 1888-, Richard Bernard, 1898-, Isaac Richard, 1890-1900, and Eileen (Wylie), ?-1965.

Purebred horses were the mainstay of the Chipman Ranch which was taken over by Richard and his sons and renamed the Elbow Park Ranch. They branched into raising cattle while continuing with horse-breeding. Richard was also heavily involved in sports, particularly in rifle competitions. The Robinsons retired to Calgary in 1922 and then to Merrell, Oregon, USA in the late 1920s.
