Biographical history
Richard "Dick" Mackley Syson, 1874-1958, was born in England, spent a number of years in South Africa, and came to Canada in 1903. He homesteaded near Ponoka, Alberta, then settled in the Pilot Knob district north of Stettler, Alberta. He and his wife had four children, including Thurston Syson and Florence (Clark).

The fonds consists of his memoirs of the people, places, flora and fauna of central Alberta which he experienced as a settler (1903-1927). He also records recollections of his childhood in England (cal 1870s) and his experiences in South Africa (ca. 1895-1897).
