Biographical history

Pertev Ibrahim "Peter" Bediz, 1914-2010, was born in Istanbul, Turkey, the son of renowned photographer Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz and his wife Bahire Pertev. He attended Galatasaray Lisesi school, graduating in 1936. Bediz then won a scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines where he earned BA and MA degrees in geological engineering. He then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked in the seismic industry until the end of the Second World War. Bediz took his family back to Turkey at the earliest opportunity and worked for the MTA, the country's geological survey, until the late 1940s. He emigrated to Canada in 1950 and joined Century Geophysical of Canada, eventually becoming President of the Canadian Company and later CEO of the parent company in the United States. He left Century in 1971 and formed his own geophysical consulting company in Calgary, Alberta, which did a great deal of work in the Saskatchewan potash industry and in Greenland. Bediz was active with many industry organizations and served as President of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 1961. Bediz and his first wife, Ann Gargan, 1918-2003, had three sons, Joseph, John and Peter. He was also survived by his second wife Ayzer and her children, Jade Yesim and Emre Unal. For further information see Turgay Ogut and Oliver Kuhn's article, "Peter (Pertev) Bediz, 1914-2010" in CSEG Recorder (January 2011) and "Pertev (Peter) Bediz" in A Sampling of Searchers / Aubrey Kerr. -- Calgary : S.A.
