Elizabeth "Betty" Binnie, 1908-1993, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. She moved to Calgary with her family in 1912. She graduated from Calgary Normal School in 1926 and taught until her marriage in 1933 to Orla Pedersen. They had two children, Carol (Merkel) and Sandy. They farmed near Standard, Alberta until they retired to Calgary in 1974.
Betty was very active in the Farm Women's Union of Alberta (FWUA), and later was an executive member of the national Unifarm organization and president of the Women of Unifarm. She was active on numerous provincial boards and commissions dealing with education, consumer affairs and the status of women. She was named to the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1976, and was named YWCA Calgary Woman of the Year in 1981.
