Administrative history
Patkau Architects is one of the Canada’s most influential and internationally recognized architectural firms. The firm was established in 1978 in Edmonton by John Patkau (b. 1947) and Patricia Patkau (b. 1950). The couple met while students at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where they were both born and raised. John received his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Manitoba in 1972 and Patricia received her master’s degree in architecture from Yale University in 1978. The firm moved from Edmonton to Vancouver in 1984. Michael Cunningham joined the firm in 1989 and became the third principal in 1995. Patkau Architects have received numerous awards and recognitions including fifteen Governor General’s Medals for Architecture. John and Patricia Patkau are fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and both were inducted into the Order of Canada in 2004. In 2013 David Shone and Greg Boothroyd joined John and Patricia as principals in the firm. Patricia retired in 2020. The firm continues to produce innovative and renowned work from their office in Vancouver, B.C.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of architectural drawings, correspondence, reports, photographs, panels, one model, and other records documenting the work of Patkau Architects from 1978 to 1983. The fonds solely consists of project records, including drawings, textual files, photographs, panels, and models. The fonds documents over 15 projects, largely in Edmonton where the Patkau office was located from 1978 to 1983. Projects documented in the fonds include Galleria Condominiums, Pyrch Residence, Blue Quill Elementary School, and McGregor Residence. There is one series in the fonds: 1. Project records.
