Biographical history
Oswald Asheton Critchley, 1862-1934, was born in Manchester, England. In 1881 he came to the Cochrane area of Alberta to ranch. He raised primarily horses. He was a physically strong man and was an active polo player. He married twice, first in 1889 to Miss Newbolt, ?-1892, and after her death to Miss Holt. He had at least three sons, including Alfred Cecil, 1890-1963, and Jack, who was killed in First World War. During First World War he and his sons fought in France with Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). After briefly returning to his ranch after the war, he sold all his Canadian interests and returned to England, where he and Alfred became involved in greyhound racing.
