Biographical history
The Oi Kwan Foundation, a charitable organization, was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1975. In 1974 elders from the Calgary Chinese United Church formed the foundation to care for the elderly in Chinatown, relieve their poverty and promote the Christian way of life among them. A subsidiary purpose was to care and participate in the education of young people in Chinatown. The foundation helped establish senior citizens' apartments in Chinatown in 1976 and 1985. In 1987 it commissioned a book commemorating early Chinese settlers to Calgary including benefactors of the Oi Kwan Foundation's endowment fund and the work of the foundation, the Calgary Chinese Mission and the Calgary Chinese United Church. Co-authors of the book were Frank Dabbs and Bev Wotton.
