Biographical history

Neil Douglas McDermid, 1911-1989, was born in Calgary and educated in Calgary public schools and at the University of Alberta. He was called to the Bar in 1936 and developed a law practice in Calgary specializing in oil and gas law. In 1938 he married Jean Gordon, ?-1988. Their two sons, G. Neil, 1941-, and David H., 1943- , both became lawyers. They also had a daughter, Cheryl (Lumley). Mr. McDermid was an alderman of the City of Calgary, 1949-1951, and Chairman of the Board of the Glenbow-Alberta Institute, 1966-1969. From 1963 to 1986 he was a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta (later named Court of Appeal of Alberta). He retired to Victoria, British Columbia, where he died in 1989.
