History
Eugene Frank Milone was born in the Bronx, New York in 1939. He received a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1961, and a Ph.D. in astronomy from Yale University. Milone taught at Gettysburg College as assistant professor of Physics, before relocating to the University of Calgary in 1971.
Milone was appointed the Director of the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory in 1971 and oversaw the development of the site from inception to a facility that supports research, teaching, and outreach. In 2001, Dr. Milone submitted a grant to build a Visitor’s Centre at the site in order to expand outreach and teaching capabilities. The $400,000 submission was successful; the new Visitor’s Centre and teaching facility was official opened in 2005. Dr. Milone stepped down as Director of the RAO on September 1, 2004.
Milone has published a number of technical papers and is the co-author of "Exploring Ancient Skies: An Encyclopedic Survey of Archeoastronomy," and "Challenges of Astronomy: Hands-on Experiments for the Sky and Laboratory."
