History
Nelson Appleton Miles, 1839-1925, was born near Westminster, Massachusetts, USA. He served in the U.S. Civil War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was appointed a colonel in 1866; and became a brigadier general in 1880. He led successful campaigns against the Apache, Nez Perce and Sioux tribes; became a senior commander of the U.S. Army in 1895; served in Cuba and Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War; and retired in 1901.
