        History

        Douglas Chalmers McColl, 1879-1915, was one of eleven children born to Neil and Anne (McDougall) McColl at Maxville, Ontario. About 1890 he moved to Ottawa with his parents who established a coal and wood business. Douglas served with the 20th Troop South African Constabulary in the South African War in 1900 and 1901. After his return, he lived on the family farm at Maxville before moving to the Youngstown area of Alberta to homestead (27-8-W4). In 1915 he went to France to fight in the First World War and was killed in the Battle of St. Julien.
