        History

Freda Elizabeth Knights, 1900-1994, was born in England. Her father, Richard Knights, moved to Millarville, Alberta in 1908 and established the Massingham Ranche. Freda and the rest of the family joined him in 1909. In 1921 she married Walter James McArthur, ?-1979, and they had four daughters, Effie (Marlow), Edith (Wiltzen), Muriel (Staples), and Noel (Goss). The family moved with the petroleum industry in which Walter was employed. They lived for a short time in Royalties, Hartell, Harmattan, and then settled in Black Diamond.

Freda taught school and participated in many community activities throughout this period. She launched the Sheep Creek Weavers group, worked with the Blackie Weavers, Hartell Handicrafts, and High River Weavers groups. She mainly concentrated on weaving and pottery, and she set up her own handicrafts shop in Black Diamond during the 1960s. She started a drop-in centre, and established the Oilfields Arts and Crafts Club. In addition to her community activities she also acted as the Black Diamond correspondent and journalist for other local newspapers.
