History
John Stewart Mavor, 1888-1976, was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, was educated at the University of New Brunswick 1905-1908, and received a BA in 1910 and an LLB in 1911 from Dalhousie University. He married Frances Iola Steeves in 1912 and they had one daughter, Geraldine. He was called to the Bar in New Brunswick in 1911 and in Alberta in 1912. He formed the partnership, Burns and Mavor in Calgary in 1912, and was named KC in 1921. He was nominated federal Conservative candidate for Bow River in 1914 and resigned in 1917. During the Second World War he enlisted in the Canadian Army (Reserve) and was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Calgary Highlanders. He was promoted to captain in 1945. He was secretary, president and bencher of the Law Society of Alberta at various times in his career.
