Biographical history

Mary Koga, 1920-2001, was born in Sacramento, California, USA, and lived most of her life in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago in 1947, and worked as a social worker for 20 years. She then studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Design Institute in the late 1960s, and turned her hobby of photography into a career. From 1972 to 1997 she made seven trips to southern Alberta and Montana Hutterite colonies, where she documented the lives of these Hutterian Brethren in both black and white and colour photographs. Her photographic prints are represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Glenbow Museum.
