Robert Edison "Bob" Martyn, 1917-1989, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and came with his parents to Calgary as a young child. He trained as a draftsman and worked for Crane Ltd., Wilkinson and McLean and the British American Oil Refinery in Calgary. For many years he worked for the Valley Pipeline Co. and the Gas and Oil Refinery Co. in Turner Valley, Alberta. In 1950 the Martyns returned to Calgary when Bob worked for the Shell Oil Company and later Home Oil. All his life he was interested in aviation and owned and flew numerous aircraft. He built a plane called the "Martyn Westwind". He and his wife, Lyla, had five children, Gerald, Stephen, Sylvia, Ross and David.
