        History

Robert Colin Marshall, 1883-1962, was born in Ingersoll, Ontario where he received his education. He moved to Calgary in 1906 and operated the BMS Construction Company with his partners, Mason F. Batchelor and Emil Skarin. The company later became Crown Paving Company and Alberta Concrete Products. In 1907 he married Annie Mae Batchelor, 1881-1915, and they had one child, Margaret Mae (Watson). In 1919 he married Daisy May MacGregor, 1888-1968, and they had two children, Donald MacGregor, and Catherine Joan (Price). Robert was a Calgary alderman from 1915 to 1918, president of the Calgary YMCA from 1917 to 1919, and mayor of the city from 1919 to 1921. He then entered the Alberta Legislature, 1921-1926, as a Liberal MLA. In 1928 the Marshalls moved to Edmonton where they were active in many organizations.

Daisy was born in Metcalfe, Ontario and in 1913 moved to western Canada from Ottawa, where she had been an editor of the Ottawa Journal's women's page. After a brief stint on the editorial staff of the Regina News, she came to Calgary to take over the women's page of The Albertan newspaper. She moved to the Calgary Herald as City Hall reporter in early 1918. From 1916 to 1920 she was president of the Calgary Branch of the Canadian Women's Press Club. Soon after her marriage she joined and became very active in the IODE. She served as provincial president from 1924 to 1949. She was awarded an OBE in 1935 for her work. She moved to Vancouver in 1962.
