Biographical history
Marshall Menzies Porter, 1894-1985, was born in Sarnia, Ontario and moved with his family to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1913. He studied law at Dalhouse University and joined the army in 1917. Porter settled in Calgary in 1919 and practiced law with John Brownlee, Andrew Naismith and others, and had various business interests until 1954 when he was appointed a Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Alberta. He was an officer of Home Oil, Alberta Salt Company, Western Printing and Lithographing, Farm and Ranch Review, Bank of Nova Scotia, Burns and Company and the Alberta Wheat Pool. Porter was active in the Calgary Stampede, Kinsmen Club of Calgary, Ranchmen's Club, Calgary Golf and Country Club and the Shriners. He received honorary degrees from Dalhousie, Indiana Technical College and Curry College. He and his wife Lillian, ?-1981, had three daughters, Betty (Engbloom), 1920-2015, Kathryn (Price), 1924-2009, and Lois (Marshall), 1927-2013.
