Biographical history

Marie Rose Delorme, 1861-1960, was born near Winnipeg, Manitoba, the daughter of a Metis fur trader. She married Charles Smith, also a fur trader, in 1877, and they came west and established the Jughandle Ranch, one of the first ranches in the Pincher Creek, Alberta area. The Smiths had 17 children.

Marie Rose wrote many stories and articles related to her life and experiences in the Canadian West. She was a close friend of Father Albert Lacombe. She moved from Pincher Creek to Lethbridge in 1956 to live with her daughter.
