        Diana Mansell was born in Winnipeg on 28 January 1943. She obtained her RN Diploma in 1963 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and worked as a staff nurse at various hospital and clinics including the Blackfoot Indian Hospital in Gleichen, Brooks General Hospital, Foothills Hospital in Calgary, WilliamRoper Hull Home, Strathmore Youth Development Centre, Calgary Remand and Detention Centre, and Bowview Nursing Home.

        In 1984 Mansell graduated with an Honours BA in Religious Studies (Eastern) from the University of Calgary, and in 1986 with a MA in History. She was a sessional instructor, later Senior Instructor at the Faculty of Nursing from 1986-2015. She graduated in 1996 with a PhD History from the University of Calgary; the title of her dissertation is: The History of Nursing in Canada: Spiritual Vocation to Secular Profession.
