Martin A. Keeley was born in England and received his MA in drama from the University of Hull. He worked as a journalist in England for a few years, then travelled through Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. He emigrated to Canada in 1971, settling in Calgary, Alberta a few years later. He was active as a director and administrator of professional theatre in Canada, as founder of City Stage in Vancouver, and as an administrator and fund raiser for Northern Lights Theatre in Edmonton and Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary. As a journalist, he specialized in trade publications of the oil and gas industry. From 1975 to 1980 he was editor and publisher of Canadian Petroleum, and he was later the Canadian Editor of Offshore Oil. After 1980 he founded his own communications consulting firm, MAK Performance Communications Ltd. The company was involved in editing and publishing in-house publications, fund raising for theatrical organizations, public relations for the oil and gas industry, and organizing conferences on offshore oil and gas technology. By 1988 MAK Performance Communications had relocated to Richmond, British Columbia. Martin Keeley retired to the Cayman Islands.
