Biographical history

James Edward Love, 1882-1962, was born in Prince Edward Island. He came to Calgary, Alberta in 1905 and established a hide and horsehair business at 4th Avenue and 4th Street SE. He expanded into the flour and feed business in 1912. His son, Horace John "Jack" Love, 1914-1990, joined the firm in 1933 and became a partner in 1941. During the Second World War the Loves began to develop and manufacture livestock feed concentrates for mixture with grains. When another son, Edward Ernest MacLeod "Ernie" Love, 1918-2002, joined the firm at the end of the war the name J.E. Love and Sons Ltd. was adopted. Jack became president of the company on his father's death, and Ernie became manager in the 1970s. The hide business and the buildings on 4th Street were sold in 1968. The feed business, Love Feeds Ltd., was taken over by Ernie's son, Mike, in the 1980s.
