Fonds F0836 - Lou Goodwin fonds

Luther "Lou" Goodwin, 1914-1997, was born and raised in Bellevue, Alberta. He received his BA in history and his MA in education from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and his doctorate of philosophy from the University of Washington in Seattle. He was hired by the University of Alberta, Calgary campus in 1945 to teach physical education. He became head of the department in 1959 and dean of the Faculty of Physical Education in 1974. In 1977 he was named Sportsman of the Year by the Calgary Booster Club. He was a city alderman, 1960-1966, and a public school board trustee for ten years.

He retired from the University of Calgary in 1979, at which time he wrote the book Fall Madness : A History of Senior and Professional Football in Calgary, Alberta, 1908-1978, at the request of the Calgary Stampeder Football Club. Goodwin was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1980. He and his wife, Shirley, had three daughters, Mimi (Szentsei), Kathleen (Hoggan), and Judi (Lee).
