Biographical history

James Lloyd Turner who grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, played hockey as a youth and professional baseball at sixteen. In about 1907 Lloyd became manager of the Fort William, Ontario baseball team and managed the hockey rink in winter, but he soon moved to Calgary, Alberta to play baseball. In 1909 he became manager of the Sherman Arena, a position he held until it was destroyed by fire in 1915. He then managed the Crystal ice rink, and in 1918 the Horse Show Building which was later called Victoria Park Arena.

In the early 1920s he managed the Calgary Tigers hockey team, and in 1925 he moved to the USA to manage professional hockey. In 1932 he returned to Calgary and introduced artificial ice for Victoria Park Arena, and again managed the Tigers. He managed the Stampede Corral from 1950 to 1964, and then retired. He was an original member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
