History
Richard Lindseth graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, receiving the University Honors Award for his graduating year, also undertaking Directed Studies Abroad at the Architecture Association in London, England. After apprenticeship in Perth, West Australia, and a scholarship to study the work of famed Mexican architect Luis Barragan, he returned to Calgary and in 1984 founded his namesake company.
Richard Lindseth Architecture Inc. is recognized for its residential and hospitality projects, ranging from traditional, formal plans, including heritage sites, to modern, contemporary spaces. Notable projects include island residences, lakeside cottages, record-selling condominiums, particularly penthouses, and widely recognized homes in Western Canada where the firm continues to be based. The firm has completed projects in over 25 cities on five continents, including residences in Canada, the United States, Australia, Europe, Northern Africa, Asia, and South America, including Venezuela, where Richard Lindseth was born.
Although Richard Lindseth Architecture Inc. is most recognized in the field of housing, the firm has a variety of designs for hospitality, mixed use, and private enterprise, including wineries in Australia and British Columbia, one of the first brew-pub restaurants in Western Canada, and most recently completing the new suburban campus for an Energy Services Company in Calgary, having earlier designed a similar campus in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Previous multi-family housing projects and modular construction include locations in such diverse countries as the USSR, the United States, and the People’s Republic of China, on behalf of recognized Canadian and International development companies in those areas.
In the early 1990s, concurrent with continuing in his architectural practice and maintaining an associate office in Los Angeles (West Hollywood), Lindseth embarked on another venture, having been awarded one of the first licenses leading to the privatization of liquor vending in the Province of Alberta, as the founding President of Kensington Wine Market, which continues to be a popular Calgary specialty retailer.
In support of various charitable and scholastic entities, Richard Lindseth has served as Chair of fundraising activities, including the Calgary Polo Club Centennial, for the Calgary Foothills Hospital Burn Unit, Archifest – A Festival of Architecture, and Strathcona Tweedsmuir Independent School, who named him 2014 Distinguished Alumni, and where he established two study bursaries in 2022 recognizing inspiring teachers.
Richard Lindseth is a Past President of the Alberta Association of Architects, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and the current President of the Architectural Foundation of Alberta.
