History
David Edwin "Ed" Lewis, 1913-1999, was born in Calgary. With the onset of the Second World War he completed his law degree at the University of Alberta in 1941, then immediately joined the Canadian Army. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. On his return in 1946 he articled with a Calgary law firm. He was called to the Bar in 1947. In 1948 he joined the legal department of Imperial Oil Ltd. and in 1954 became regional solicitor. He worked for Imperial Oil until 1974. In his latter years he joined the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations.
He was co-author, with Andrew Thompson, 1925-2000, of Canadian Oil and Gas, a six volume law and service text. In 1960 he was made a QC. He was chairman of the board of the Glenbow, 1980-1983 and was also active with the Canadian Petroleum Association, Heritage Park, Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Calgary Zoological Society and the John Howard Society. He married Josephine E. McCarten in 1950, and they had two children, Diane (Atkinson) and David.
