Samuel Aubrey Kerr, 1915-2008, was born in Orillia, Ontario and received a Masters degree in geology from the University of British Columbia in 1942. He joined Imperial Oil in Calgary, Alberta and was very involved in the development of the Leduc field. In 1949 he became Chief Geologist for Home Oil and in 1960, Senior Geologist for the National Energy Board in Ottawa. He lived in Ottawa, Ontario while working for NEB, but returned to Calgary, Alberta in 1975 to manage oil and gas rights under Treaty Lands. He was a member of APEGGA, CSPG, CSEG, CIM, and the Petroleum History Society. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Calgary in 1998 and was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame the same year. Kerr married Helena (Elsie) Ruth Jaworski, 1916-2006, and they had two sons, Ernie and Robert.
Kerr is the author of seven books on the history of the Canadian petroleum industry including Atlantic No.3 (1986), Corridors of Time (1988), Leduc (1991), Corridors of Time II (1991), Redwater (1994), Judy Creek and Beyond (1999), and Corridors of Time III (2004).
