Karen Gainer, 1957- , was born in Calgary, Alberta and attended the University of Calgary where she received a BA and LLB. From 1981 to 1996 she had a private legal practice in the city. From 1984 to the 1990s she was an active member of the Liberal Party and twice ran for parliament. She served on constituency boards, organized campaigns, and was a delegate to national party conventions. She also served as the Chair of the Calgary Board of Health from 1989 to 1995; and was a director or member of the Calgary Native Friendship Society, Performing Arts Centre Corporation, Calgary John Howard Society and the City of Calgary Development Appeal Board. From 1996 to 2004 she was Senior Country Director in Croatia for the National Democratic Institute.
