Fonds F2196 - Judy Lo fonds

Judy Annemarie Wong, 1936-1998, was born in Shekki, Cung Shan district, Guangdong Province, China, the daughter of York Lun Wong, 1912- , and Choy-Yung Lee Wong, ?-1991. Her parents left China in 1937 to settle in Fiji where Judy received her education. She graduated with a BA from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 1959 and worked for a year at the Fiji National Archives. She then attended the University of Sydney and graduated with an MA in Urban Planning in 1964. She married Wayne Lo in 1965 and they lived for two years in Hong Kong where Judy worked for the Department of Planning. In 1967 they moved to Calgary, Alberta and for three years Judy taught in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary. She worked for the Alberta Human Rights Commission from 1975 to 1988, and then with the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada until 1994.

She was very active in community organizations including Alberta Human Rights Commission (Commissioner, 1994-1997), Canada Employment and Immigration Advisory Council, 1985-1987, Alberta Heritage Council, 1985-1987, Calgary Chinese Public School, 1976-1981 (Principal, 1979-1981), Calgary Immigrant Aid Society, 1978-1981, Calgary Chinese Cultural Society, 1982-1997, Calgary Canadian Citizenship Council (CCCC), 1982-1987 (President, 1985-1987), and the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre, 1985-1988. The Calgary Canadian Citizenship Council was formed in 1950 as a voluntary non-profit society. Initially its mandate was to assist newcomers to Canada. Today it encourages Canadian unity and the development of Canadian culture.
