Biographical history
Joe Butlin, ?-1924, was born in Kingston, Ontario and came to western Canada with the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1874. He later served in the 1885 Riel Rebellion (North West Rebellion). After leaving the police he operated a stone quarry in Alberta, on the Elbow River, and later became a butcher. In 1901 he moved to Wetaskiwin as an employee of Pat Burns, and from 1912 to 1921 he was Indian agent on the Hobbema reserve. He and his wife, Angelique Roussel (or Roselle), 1859-1946, had ten children, John, Louis Nelson, 1885-?, James, 1887-1978, Walter, William, David, Archibald, Gladys (Schultz), Edward, 1890-?, and Frank Gable, 1902-?.
