      History

David Carlton Jones was born on December 14, 1914 in Calgary, Alberta. At the age of 16, he studied Aeronautics at the Provincial Institute of Technology (PITA, now Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). He then studied Engineering at the University of Alberta and earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University. He taught aeronautics at PITA from 1937-1940.

Beginning in July 1940, Jones helped establish the #5 Elementary Flight Training School in Lethbridge, Alberta, part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and served as lead ground instructor. He continued as lead ground instructor when the school moved to High River, Alberta in May 1941, and in particular, he taught on the Link Trainer, a flight simulator for Tiger Moth planes. He was discharged from the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1945.

After the war, Jones worked at various firms including the Canadian Natural Gas Company. From 1954-1977, he held engineering and managerial positions at the Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas Company, and was CEO and Chairman of the Board at the time of his retirement. He was active in industry associations including Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), also serving on numerous Calgary boards and committees.

Jones married Marion Glover of Calgary in November 1940, and they had two daughters. He died on September 24, 1998.
