Biographical history

John Wright Proctor, 1911-1994, was born in Brighton, Ontario, the son of Charles R.W. Proctor and Mona L. Wright. The family moved to Edmonton in 1919, where his father managed a bank, but returned to Ontario in 1926. Proctor attended the Royal Military College, 1930-1934, then prospected in northern Ontario until 1939. He married Lorraine Cooke in 1938 and they had two sons, John R. and Charles Douglas. During the Second World War he served as transport officer, chief of staff of the Fourth Canadian Armoured Division, and was promoted to brigadier by the end of the war. He was also awarded the OBE. On his return he was made head of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Edmonton. From 1950 to 1955 he was general manager of Alberta Interfield Pipelines Ltd., and in 1955 he moved to Calgary to assume the position of general manager of the Canadian Petroleum Association. He retired from CPA in 1975, and moved to De Winton to operate a tree farm.

The fonds consists of John's autobiography, military papers, newsclippings, album of Second World War photograph, scrapbook and oil company share certificates; family histories of the Proctor and Wright families; and diary kept by Minnie Proctor Northrup (John's aunt) during trip across Canada with Conservative MPs (1902). Includes a letter from Gen. T.B. Strange to Capt. Joshua Wright about the 1885 Riel Rebellion (North West Rebellion).
