Biographical history
John W. Mitchell, 1872-1952, was born in Cambridgeshire, England and came to Calgary, Alberta in 1891. In 1899 he was manager of the Old Country Shoe Store, and by 1910 he was accountant for W. Stuart and Co., a lumber firm. In 1915 he was president and managing director of Calgary Lumber and Supplies Ltd. He was an alderman from 1906-1910 and 1915-1916, and mayor for 1911 and 1912. For the rest of his working life he was director of the Government Employment Bureau, canvasser for United Grain Growers Securities, and agent for Frank R. Logan and Co. In 1913 he married Kathleen Lang who was a member of the Alpine Club.
