Biographical history
John Thompson Cuyler, 1886-1970, was born in Mount Albert, Ontario. He received teaching certificates from York County Model School in 1904 and from the Alberta Normal School (Calgary Normal School) in 1910, and a B.A. from the University of Alberta in 1938. He taught in the village of Unionville, Ontario from 1904 to 1907 and in rural schools in the High River, Alberta area from 1908 to 1911. He was a teacher and principal in the Medicine Hat school system from 1911 to 1952, then worked part-time for Mount Royal College in Calgary. He married Clara Pollock (1886-1959) in 1918, and married Hazel Thomson (1894-ca. 1984) in 1960. He had three children: Mary Nance, Anne Noreen (Mrs. David Hargrave), and John David.

The fonds consists of biographical information provided by Noreen Hargrave; teaching certificates, reports of school inspectors on his teaching skills, employment agreements with school boards, reminiscences of his experiences at the Normal School (1910) and as principal of Connaught School in Medicine Hat (1916-1929), a song written by his sister-in-law Myrtle Cuyler. Includes photographs of the graduating class of the Normal School (1910), a class portrait of Toronto Street School, Medicine Hat (1913), and a group portrait of the teaching staff of Connaught School (1919).
